Claude Ultra: the 5-hour limit is gone, the weekly cap stays
Claude Ultra plan limits explained: no 5-hour limit for verified accounts, a weekly cap of 10x Pro, why Max 20x was renamed, and what users think of it.

Short answer
On October 30, 2026 Anthropic renamed Max 20x to Ultra and removed the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts. The weekly limit stays at 10x Pro. The old 20x only ever applied to the 5-hour window, which Claude's subscriptions product lead acknowledged with an apology. Verification is automatic and rolls out in stages. Ultra helps long, uninterrupted sessions; it does not add weekly capacity.

On October 30, 2026 Anthropic renamed its top Claude plan from Max 20x to Ultra and removed the 5-hour usage limit for verified Ultra accounts. Within hours the announcement passed seven million views, and the most-liked replies were not cheers but one question: did "20x" just become "10x"? This review covers exactly what changed, what Anthropic said, how people reacted, which claims hold up, and who Ultra actually helps.
What Anthropic announced
The announcement came from the official @claudeai account. It made four points:
- Rename: Max 5x becomes Max, Max 20x becomes Ultra. Subscribers do not need to do anything.
- 5-hour limit removed for verified Ultra accounts, "starting today with most existing subscribers".
- Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until they are verified, "which helps us prevent fraud and abuse", with an email when it is removed.
- "Weekly limits remain unchanged."
As of November 3 the post had about 6.99 million views, 31,972 likes and 2,749 replies.

Minutes later Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code, posted a one-line confirmation, "We're removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts." (about 787,000 views and 9,810 likes).

The 20x vs 10x question, answered
The confusion is easy to see. The old plan was called Max 20x. The new Ultra card says 10x Pro usage every week. Read side by side, it looks like usage was halved and hidden behind a new name.
Anthropic's answer came from the person responsible for the plans. In a post introduced with "I lead product for Claude subscriptions", Mike Overell explained the history: when the top plan launched in April 2025 it had only a 5-hour limit, set at 20x Pro, hence the name. When weekly limits were added later, the weekly limit was set at 10x Pro while the 5-hour limit stayed at 20x. He acknowledged that some new users assumed 20x applied to both limits, and wrote, "We could have done better here, and I'm sorry." The post had about 832,000 views and 4,066 likes by November 3.

We checked this against Anthropic's own page from before the change. The pricing page as archived on October 19, 2026 says Max "gives you 5x or 20x more usage per 5-hour session than Pro". The multiplier was described per 5-hour session; the archived FAQ mentions weekly limits on paid plans but gives no weekly multiplier.

| Max 20x (before October 30) | Ultra (now) | |
|---|---|---|
| 5-hour limit | 20x Pro | None for verified accounts |
| Weekly limit | 10x Pro (per the product lead; not stated on the old page) | 10x Pro (stated on the page) |
| Where the numbers are written | 5-hour multiplier only | Both limits, per plan |
Bottom line: nothing on the record shows weekly usage going down. What changed is that the 5-hour gate opened for verified accounts, and the weekly number that already existed is now written on the page. In a reply, the product lead put it plainly: the Ultra plan has the same usage as Max 20x, but with no 5-hour limit.
What Ultra includes now
The plan comparison table on the pricing page lists the limits and models side by side:

| Free | Pro | Max | Ultra | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Limit every 5 hours | Limited | 1x | 5x | No limit (verified) |
| Limit every week | Limited | 1x | 5x | 10x |
| Fable | No | Usage credits | 50% of weekly limits | 50% of weekly limits |
| Opus | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Sonnet, Haiku | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Context window | Up to 1M, varies by model | Up to 1M | Up to 1M | Up to 1M |

Two details are easy to miss. First, Ultra's only new usage line is the removed 5-hour limit; everything else is "everything in Max" plus the larger weekly allowance the old Max 20x already had. Second, Fable, Anthropic's model for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work, is capped at 50% of the weekly limit on Ultra, exactly as on Max. Ultra does not unlock more Fable as a share of the week.
The FAQ also confirms that activity on the web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code "all draws from the same pool". A long Claude Code session and your chats share one weekly budget.
Verification: who gets it, and when
The no-5-hour line has a footnote: verified accounts. From the official post and the product lead's replies:
- Most existing subscribers were included from day one.
- Newer accounts keep a temporary 5-hour limit until verified.
- Verification is automatic, and you get an email when the limit is removed.
- There is no way to apply for verification yet; the product lead said the team is exploring it, and that the staged rollout exists because fraud and abuse are "a big problem".
In practice: if you upgraded recently and still hit a 5-hour wall, that is expected until the email arrives. Replies under the announcement describe exactly that: some accounts unlocked on day one while others were still waiting.

The pattern: people who mainly hit the 5-hour wall celebrated; people who read "20x" as their total allowance felt misled. The second group was reacting to the old name, not to a measured cut, which is why the product lead's explanation (and apology) became one of the most-viewed posts of the day.
Checking the loudest claims
| Claim | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| "Ultra halved usage from 20x to 10x." | Not supported | The 20x was the 5-hour limit (archived page, October 19); the weekly limit was 10x before and after (product lead; "weekly limits remain unchanged"). |
| "The rename hides a cut." | Not supported | No documented reduction. The rename came with a removed limit, not an added one. |
| "20x was misleading." | Fair criticism | The old page gave only the 5-hour multiplier. The product lead acknowledged the confusion and apologised. |
| "Ultra gives more total usage." | False | Same weekly 10x as Max 20x; the product lead says the usage is the same. |
| "Fable drains the 5-hour window fast." | Plausible, not measured | Anthropic's model docs list Fable as the slowest current model with a high default effort; we found no published measurement of how fast it uses the window. |
Our honest review
What is genuinely good. The 5-hour window was the limit that interrupted real work: a long refactor, a migration across many files, an agent loop that needed one more hour. Removing it for the top plan lets that kind of session finish, which is exactly what Anthropic said the change is for. The new pricing page is also clearer than the old one: every plan now states both its 5-hour and weekly limit, which is the information users were missing.
What is not. Ultra adds no weekly capacity. If you already run out of your week before the week ends, Ultra changes nothing for you except where the wall appears: you now meet it at the end of a long session instead of mid-session. Fable stays at half the weekly limit, so heavy Fable users gain nothing extra in share. Verification has no application route, so a new subscriber can do nothing but wait for an email. And the "20x" name was confusing for a long time before this fix; the apology was right, and overdue.
Who should care. If your bottleneck is the 5-hour window (long, focused sessions in Claude Code), the verified Ultra plan removes it. If your bottleneck is the weekly allowance, Ultra and the old Max 20x are the same.
What we did not test. We have not run an Ultra account for this review, so we make no claim about how long a session lasts in practice. Everything above comes from Anthropic's pages and posts, captured on November 3, 2026.
Verdict: a real improvement for long sessions, explained badly at first and then explained well. Treat Ultra as "no interruptions within the week", not as "more usage".
Getting the most out of a no-5-hour plan
When the weekly allowance is the only limit, how you spend the week matters more than how you spend an afternoon:
- Check Settings > Usage before starting a big session. The FAQ points there for where you stand at any time.
- Plan heavy sessions across the week. A long run on Monday and another on Tuesday can leave nothing for Friday.
- Keep Fable for the hard steps. It is capped at half the weekly limit; use Opus or Sonnet for routine coding and Haiku for quick extraction or classification.
- Remember the shared pool. Chats on web, desktop and mobile draw from the same weekly budget as Claude Code.
- Watch for the email if your account is new. Until it arrives, the 5-hour limit still applies.
How we split work between two coding agents to make limits last is in Claude Code vs Codex CLI.

Frequently asked questions
Did Claude Ultra cut usage from 20x to 10x?
No change to the weekly allowance is documented. Claude's subscriptions product lead explained that the top plan's 20x applied to the 5-hour limit and the weekly limit was set at 10x Pro when weekly limits were added. The pricing page archived on October 19, 2026 also describes 20x as usage per 5-hour session. Ultra keeps the weekly 10x and removes the 5-hour limit.
How do I know if my Ultra account is verified?
Anthropic says verification is automatic and you get an email when the 5-hour limit is removed. Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until verified. The product lead said there is not yet a way to submit for verification.
Does Ultra give more weekly usage than the old Max 20x?
No. The product lead stated that Ultra has the same usage as Max 20x, without the 5-hour limit. The weekly limit is 10x Pro on both.
How much Fable can I use on Ultra?
The plan comparison table lists Fable at 50% of weekly limits on both Max and Ultra. On Pro, Fable is paid with usage credits.
Where can I see how much of my limit I have used?
The pricing page FAQ points to Settings > Usage, where you can see where you stand at any time.
Is Ultra worth it if I rarely hit the 5-hour limit?
Probably not for that reason alone. Ultra's change is the removed 5-hour window; the weekly allowance is the same 10x as before. If your work is limited by the weekly cap rather than by the 5-hour window, Ultra does not add capacity.
